(and Why It Might Not Be a Problem)
Have you looked at Google Analytics lately and thought:
- “Why is my website traffic down?”
- “My SEO was working — what changed?”
- “Impressions are up but clicks are down. Is my website broken?”
If that sounds familiar, take a breath. You’re not alone, and your site probably isn’t broken. What you’re seeing is part of a wider shift in how search works.
It’s being called “The Great Decoupling” — and while the name sounds dramatic, the fix doesn’t need to be.
Let’s break down what’s happening and what you can do about it — in plain terms.
What Are People Noticing?
If you’re running your own website or doing your own digital marketing, these might feel familiar:
- 📉 Google Analytics 4 (GA4) shows lower traffic
- 📈 Google Search Console shows more impressions but fewer clicks
- 📊 Looker Studio dashboards seem off or worrying
- 🧩 You’re Googling things like:
- “Why is my website traffic going down?”
- “SEO for beginners UK”
- “How to read GA4 reports”
- “How to improve my website’s visibility”
This can be frustrating, especially if you’re trying to do it all yourself. But don’t worry — you haven’t done anything wrong.
What’s Actually Happening?
Here’s what “The Great Decoupling” means, and why it’s not your fault.
🧠 1. Google AI Overviews Are Reducing Clicks
Google is rolling out AI Overviews in UK search results — answers that appear at the top of the page and often give users everything they need, without needing to click on a website.
→ More on AI Overviews
So even if your site is shown, fewer people are clicking through. Your impressions may stay the same — or even go up — but your traffic dips.
🔍 2. Zero-Click Searches Are Increasing
This is part of a long-term trend. More and more users get their answer directly on the search results page (weather, opening times, definitions, how-tos). They aren’t clicking on answers, just reading them, so we call them zero-click searches.
→ Study on Zero-Click Searches
Your content might still be working, but users don’t need to visit your page to get what they need.
📉 3. Visibility Doesn’t Equal Visits
Google Search Console shows “impressions” — that means your content was seen. But clicks measure how often someone actually visited your site. This is the decoupling: visibility without traffic.

What This Isn’t
It’s important to say what it’s not:
- ❌ Not a penalty
- ❌ Not a failure in your SEO
- ❌ Not your site being “broken”
- ❌ Not you doing something wrong
This is a shift in Google itself — not a reflection of poor performance on your part.
What to Do (No Panic Needed)
You don’t need to start from scratch. Here’s how to adapt:
✅ 1. Focus on engaged visitors, not just overall traffic
Is your website doing its job? Are people taking action when they do arrive? Look at conversions, email signups, sales, or enquiries — not just visitor numbers.
✅ 2. Structure your content to help Google help you
Make it easy for Google to understand and highlight your content:
- Use clear headings
- Include FAQs or bullet points
- Add summaries at the top of blog posts
This increases your chances of being quoted in an AI Overview — or even winning a featured snippet.
✅ 3. Track smarter
Use a mix of GA4, Search Console and Looker Studio to spot patterns over time. Don’t rely on daily spikes or single data points.
✅ 4. Use more than just SEO
Search isn’t the only way people find you. Use:
- Email newsletters (See my many other blog posts on Mailchimp!)
- Social media
- Local business directories
- Collaborations and referrals (Share your reputation with other local voices)
