How to Keep Track of Your SEO

…and actually understand It without losing your mind!

If you run a small business, charity or non-profit, you’ve probably heard that SEO matters — but how do you know if yours is working?

Good news: you don’t need to be a tech genius to see and understand your search performance. In fact, with just a few checks each month, you can see what’s improving. You can also spot what needs fixing. This ensures your website gets seen by the people you’re trying to reach.

Here’s my starting guide to SEO monitoring, which I’ve made simple and human-friendly.

1. Check Your Google Rankings Regularly

Use a free tool like Google Search Console or even a simple Google search in ‘incognito mode’ to see where your site shows up for key phrases like:

  • “ethical gift shop UK”
  • “non-profit services near me”
  • “eco-friendly homewares UK”

Are you on page 1 or 10? If you’re sliding down, time to refresh your content or fix technical issues. Don’t know how? See our other blog posts.

2. Monitor Website Traffic in GA4

Take a couple of minutes to check how many people visit your site each week or month. Is it going up or flatlining? Where are they coming from — search, social, direct?

This tells you if your SEO changes (or blog posts) are making a difference. Make a note of any surprising findings, too. They could help you decide how to spend your marketing time in the future.

3. Track Your Best-Performing Pages

Which pages or blog posts get the most visits? Is your “About” page ignored while your “Sustainability” page gets loads of clicks? Focus your energy where people are going, or use that insight to change your strategy.

4. Watch for High Bounce Rates

If lots of visitors leave after one page, something isn’t right — maybe slow loading, confusing layout, or dull copy. Spot this early to fix it. Make sure the page looks good on mobile, too.

5. Use Keywords Naturally

Once a month, check your site content — is it still using the words people search for? (Example: “fair trade gifts UK” rather than “handcrafted items.”) Adjust gently to stay relevant.

Final Tip: Small, Regular Checks Beat Big Changes

SEO monitoring doesn’t need to be overwhelming. A regular, free of charge monthly review can keep your website healthy and your visitors growing.
